Internship in Eisai Indonesia, DAMN! How Lucky I am!

For me, Internship Program in PT Eisai Indonesia is one of the most valuable experience ever. Thank you AIESEC for this opportunity.

Hola! My name is Farid Ali Syahbana, I am part of AIESEC Indonesia from Local Chapter Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta.

During my participation in AIESEC, I was actively join in many project and program that initiated to elaborate our skill and potential as young generation. Our big vision that to fulfill humankind potential and more contribution for better future.

One of very memorable experience for me during join AIESEC is the Eisai Project, a short internship program held in collaboration with PT Eisai Indonesia that invited 3 chosen medical students to come to PT Eisai Indonesia, to learn, discuss and participate more as member of company.

With 3 medical students of Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta, they are; Toni Febriyanto,  Sania Rifa Zaharadina, and Maria Seraphine, I was invited as chosen participant to join the program called Eisai Project. This is a Short Internship Program held by AISEC youth organization in partnership with PT. Eisai Indonesia to join and becoming corporate member of PT Eisai Indonesia during five days. The internship program intensively dedicated to introduce PT Eisai Indonesia among medical students and their roles in Lymphatic Filariasis desease in indonesia. The main agenda of the short internship is to give professional experience to the chose participants about healthy life and disease medication and prevention, with core activities that are Eisai Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) Project Managers Meeting, Factory Visit and BELKAGA (Bulan Eliminasi Kaki Gajah) Event.

So many interesting things during the 5 days of the short internship program by story below. Let's check this Out!

As a Coordinator staff of Internship Human Resources in Department of Outgoing Global Internship Program AIESEC UGM, it was an honor to deliver our services to become a hub for young talent to reach their future dreams by professional experience. Eisai Project is one of our collaboration program to give opportunity for 3 chosen medical students to join the short internship program and directly in touch with specific issue of Lymphatic Filariasis disease in Indonesia.

For me, this program is a really interesting yet a challenging one. As a Social and Political Science student, who majoring International Relations, my academical background is not covering such the medical science to discuss about certain disease in front of people. Even more when its about discuss the Lymphatic Filariasis and DEC medicines, which is the main topic in this program.

But its not a big deal, when I know that PT Eisai as our partner in this program have prepared a great event named Eisai Project Managers Meeting that invited all the project managers from all around the world to discuss, share and learn. What a great opportunity for me to enlarge my network and got a such very special experience from this program.

It was an honor for me as an AIESEC member to join with the project managers. Not only because they was very kind with us, when even they know we are just a student, they also can be a very good mentor, that give us so many insights and knowledge during our participation along the agenda for five days.

That’s why we're becoming close each other and  bring the joyful for every single moment during the days of this our short internship program.

September 29th: Introduction in PT Eisai Indonesia Central Office

Our first day: around nine o'clock in the morning, I and three of UGM medical students; Sania, Sera and Toni just arrived in Jakarta and directly attend the preparation of this managers meeting on September 29th. Sania, Sera and Toni were passed our selection process during last month to eligible to become participant for this program.

As the first day, we got company orientation session to know more about Eisai company profile, the philosophy of the company delivered by president director of PTEI, Mrs. Diena Tjiptadi and Project committe Ms Risa Kamata.

What I found a really interesting from Eisai company was about the background of its philosophy it self. Eisai was an unique pharmaceutical company compared to other companies because of its philosophy that was human health care or HHC. The meaning was “We give our first thoughts to patients and their families, and to increasing the benefits health care provides.” I think it is more than a dedication by the human value; they put the patients and their families as the top priority rather than the business activities.

Further more, the introduction meeting in this first day also conducted us to got got the explanation about how Eisai’s support for LF elimination program by their projects general introduction, watched video about Eisai participant in DEC project, drug regulatory and code of conduct in Indonesia. Further more, they also well spoken to tell us about Japan social and culture, the country where the Eisai company originated, as well both of our mentors of the day; Ms. Risa Kamata, and Mr. Kentaro Nagane.

September 30th: Knowing LF Disease and Project Managers Meeting
Proceed to the second day on September 30th, the meeting of DEC Project Manager officially started and in this meeting I face so many new faces which came from different country. They were came to representing their Eisai Company in their country and also presenting how their DEC project run before, and how the progress. The meeting started at 9 am. It held in a middle sized room with many new faces I’ve seen presenting their own country. They were friendly and with an open hearted approached the students first. We feel like an important guest there.

They gave us their business card before introduced themselves to us. And then we separated into 2 big groups with each are consist of 8 persons to got the orientation first. After that, we had an ice breaking before start the formal meeting, Mrs. Risa who bring the game coming into the panel was called it “Traffic Jam” game.

This game taught me quite lot of things. First,  I learned about team work. Because we are divided into two big group so everyone had to discuss and work together to get the solution of the problems. Second, I learned about respecting others. Everyone had their opinion, so we couldn’t be selfish. We had to hear other opinion and discuss it together to achieve our goal. Third, enjoying the process and never hear what people said. Because the opposite team were very rarely sounding too loud and cheers shown like won the game, that’s make my group become stressed more.

But really happy and proud that we can handle the problems calmly by together, we solved the problems, and we show the final answer of solution with really smooth just only by one trial. Of course it is an awesome since the opposite team cann’t finish the challenge until three times trial. After had fun with the game, the next agenda was presentation about hhc and SECI model.

I just realized that it turns out the previous game which we played before became a model of how SECI method is executed. From the presentation, another thing that made me interested was about the value of Eisai Company. “Eisai’s objectives values was not only to get profit, sales, costs but more likely to get patient’s satisfaction because when patients satisfied, then the profit will follow automatically” that’s how Mr. Takayama San explain to us about how Eisai philosophy run until now a days.

After that, the agenda move to presentation from manager of DEC project in each country. I was looking forward to see each manager’s presentation. The presentation was about how the projects of DEC medicine has been run until this year, how the activities done in each country, and how long result of their project, challenges that they had while doing DEC project as well as the participant could give comment or ask question about the presentation. It’s really nice to see this global partnership and knowing that every country work together to eliminate lymphatic filariasis by 2020 as our common target.

In addition: We also had some fun at night when we gathered and ate our dinner together with some old Japanese music and good food. yummy :)

October 1st: Socialization with LF patients in Bogor Factory, and Join BELKAGA event

The next day, we went to Bogor factory by bus. On the way to Bogor factory we sat by our group in the bus to discuss three questions given which asking about the summarize of what the meeting material in the 2nd day talking about.

The discussion talking about what is HHC philosophy, why do we need to socialize with patients, and why is the target patient. How lucky that I have the great team members, Mr. Fabian Gusovsky and Mrs. Valerie Ann L. Valeza.

We discussed the answers very nice and approximately after one hour we arrived at Bogor factory. From green environment of Eisai Bogor factory, I could see that this factory had a good quality management for its surrounding environment. The factory was very comply and commit to keep the place safety and healthy for every single person of their guests. High quality standard of health and cleanliness is a must and even become their top priority in this company. This shown from whole days during our activities there, cleanliness of transportation, temperature check, and so on to ensure all of us in a good and health enough to enter the factory. In the factory hall, we met with two of the LF patients, and they share to us about their stories and personal life related to the disease.

We had a dialogue with the Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) patients, they shared their feelings and thought, their hope and maybe what the needs that we and company can provide. The discussion running smoothly, where we could ask freely about their life, how come the got the disease, and try to express our willingness to help them. Sharing session with the LF patients is one of enjoyable moment for me, when I can hear their struggles, how hard the survived, and how inspiring their willingness to recover from the disease.

During the discussion, we have two translators to help us to communicate inter-language; English, Bahasa Indonesia, and the local language (Sundanese). The discussion was very insightful, that we can know deeper about the Lymphatic Filariasis disease, the patients background, their process to heal until their inspiring story to got recovery soon.

After hear and learn directly with the LF patients, we are moving to the center of the city to join one of the biggest event in the year, Bulan Eliminasi Kaki Gajah (BELKAGA) - Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Month, that is a very first experience to join such this event. Before joining this program I didn’t even know that there was the event called Belkaga in Indonesia. Maybe because Yogyakarta was non endemic district of LF in Indonesia, and also minimum awareness of the issues that still exist in the middle of our society even until nowadays.

This event is an official event dedicated to commemorate the urgency of LF treatment and elimination. In order to achieve WHO Global Goal to eliminate LF as a global public-health problem by 2020, Ministry of Health of Indonesia in partnership with Eisai held this Mass Drug Administration event. In this Belkaga event, people got free medication to consume pills that consist of Albendazole and DEC (Diethylcarbamazine Citrate), the most effective medication to consume to avoid the contamination of LF viruses in human body. To eliminate LF disease, the medication needs to maintain people to consume the pills minimum once in  a year in minimum 5 years to kill the viruses.

Belkaga event that centered in Bogor was very crowded and high enthusiast form citizen around. The participants in this event started from elementary students to adult.

At the end of the day, we close the activites by having dinner together. In the middle of Dinner, one of our team initiate to have such a special tradition from Japan: we close the dinner with Japanese way and yelling Yoo’o! while clap our hands once.  So enjoyable dinner, and I feel so recharge after a long tiring day.

October 2ndFinal Workshop with WHO, MoH, and RTI to solve the LF Disease

In this our 2nd meeting (as the last day of our Project Meeting) in the Pullman Hotel, Central Jakarta, we discussed everything about how to get our target that eliminate the LF disease by 2020.

To support our knowledge about the dinamic of LF disease, we were met with some speciall guests. They are the representative from WHO, NGO, and Ministry of Health that really concern about LF in Indonesia. We made a map showing the feeling of the patient we met yesterday and then put idea on how to made a change for them. Like how to increase the awareness of their surrounding, how to decrease the morbidity, and how to make them feel accepted by their society again. There were many process of action plan map before we could reach the conclusion about what the action we need to take.

We discussed with WHO, NGO and Ministry of Health about our idea, they added and also gave many new knowledge to us about LF. How lucky I am that I have Mr. Fabian and Mrs. Li Ann as a really fabulous team members. Both of them are really smart and kind, they can share their idea to me and they give me a chance to also contribute my idea and even a golden chance to show our idea as together in front of the panel of meeting.

That’s why I feel so excited. Our idea became the most outstanding idea and became the best among others. I learned a lot of things at this great meeting than I can understood about LF disease, how to face it, what we can do, how the patients feel, and also how the doctor and scientist workhard to solve it.

October 3rd: AIESEC Internship Action Plan and Wrap Up

At the last day, we invited to the Sentral Senayan II, National Head Quarter of PT Eisai Indonesia.  At the Fifth day, we met Mrs. Risa San, Mr.Takayama San, Mr. Kentaro San, Mrs. Grace, and Mrs. Jenny for our last day. We discuss for evaluation of our  participation during the project activities, how it feels, whats our opinion and elaborate our ideas to join and support the project of eliminating the LF disease by 2020. It was so interesting because we got a special chance to share and discuss our highlighted moment during this event and which part does memorable to share.

They listen to our opinion, asking the follow up questions, and even they appreciated the ideas coming by wrote it all in a proper book notes. We discussed about our next agenda, our idea, what we can do next for further contribution on our big agenda of LF elimination by 2020. I feel so honor they served us very professional. After the last meeting, we got lunch together, then got our back flight schedule at 1 p.m.

Those are our fantastic experience during the five days during our participation in Short Internship Program with PT. Eisai Indonesia.

Over all, I really appreciate PT Eisai Indonesia that have been invited us and give us the opportunity to join in this program. I was very impressed with how the company has been treat us very well and professional yet still very fun and enjoyable. It’s also an honor for me to know more such a great company, PT. Eisai Indonesia, join the big agenda of  Project Managers meeting, and participate in the whole discussion along the program.

We wish we got such a memorable experience from this, and of course execute our project plan for real contribution form us to succed the agenda to eliminate the LF disease for Indonesia, Indonesia free from LF by 2020, we can do it!
